Dr Athanasios Agalianos is a Geotechnical Engineer at GR8 GEO. He completed his Ph.D on strike–slip faulting and interaction with structures: a combined numerical and experimental study at the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering of ETH Zurich under the supervision of Prof. I. Anastasopoulos. Subsequently, he worked as a senior researcher and lecturer at the same group. During this time, in addition to lecturing and thesis supervision, he actively participated in various projects in the new ETH beam centrifuge, related e.g. to reinforced concrete piles and pile groups of bridges under axial, lateral and combined loading and performance of offshore wind turbine monopile foundations within the Horizon 2020 GEOLAB project. His experimental work was complemented with Finite Element analyses, including calibration of constitutive models and model validation against centrifuge tests.
His research focus is on geotechnical earthquake engineering and soil-structure interaction, with several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings. Selected consulting projects he has worked on include the optimization of a common piled-raft foundation system for three high-rise buildings in Zurich, Switzerland.
